Gun Nuts Exploit Tragedy

As I write this, I'm following the horrible story of the gun violence in Virginia Tech University, where a gunman brutally murdered 32 people today. We all know that the United States has some of the highest gun-related deaths in the world. What can we do about it? Well, if you are a gun nut like Glenn Reynolds, you could argue that the problem was the gun ban on campus. He notes that a bill to allow students carry handguns on campus was shot down and concludes "Had the bill passed, things might have turned out differently". At times like this, I simply think that the right is criminally insane. Think about it. A campus where every drunken frat boy has a handgun in his pocket. Wonderful. By this logic, Fallujah and Ramada must be some of the safest cities in the world...

I knew this argument would surface very soon and now here it is. Yes, the problem of gun violence in our schools and society in general can be solved by (drumroll) MORE GUNS! Perfect logic. As Roosevelt once said "A Chicken in Every Pot" our 21st Century mantra should be "An AK47 in Every Backpack". American youth from grade school to university should be packing heat and Marksmanship taught in place of science. Are they teaching you Darwinism? Shoot 'em! Is someone messing with you? Shoot 'em! Is an Ayrab kid in your class? Shoot 'em!

And always remember:
Guns don't Kill, People Do!

True. I am one of those "you can have my gun when you pry it out of my dead hand" people (although I don't even have a gun...) but the idea of everyone carrying WEAPONS at a college? How about an environment where you don't NEED one? And I can't help but ask where the police were in all this? Cho shot some people, then left for half an hour, and people were still hanging around when he came back? Does that strike anyone else as ineffective protection?

Of course, if someone disagrees with Minion's position (except on abortion) its perfectly acceptable to bring out the name-calling.

But you can't talk nasty about pro-aborts, they might abandon hiking the minimum wage 45 cents. They're your allies, your friends, even if they are misguided on one small issue like baby-killing.

But those gun nuts on the other side? Screw them, they're barely human.

I stand in awe at your Christian witness, Minion. It is humbling to be in such a presence.

Speaking of name calling--
Anyone who disagrees with Franklin Jennings is automatically assumed to be a "Pro-Abort"? Is that how it works?

No, supporting legalised abortion makes one pro-abortion.

She didn't call them "Pro-gun", but rather "gun-nut".

If I'd called most democrats baby-killers, you'd have a point. As it stands however...

"Where every drunken frat boy has a handgun" is simply a gross misconception of the pro-gun position. Jurisdictions that have CCW laws have around 1% to 3% of the population apply for one. Had that been the case at VT somebody might have been able to take him out. The "having all people armed argument" is nothing more than a lack of serious thought on the subject.
